Planning for places of worship (D1)

At Plainview Planning we regularly help religious organisations secure planning consent for their D1 premises.

This month we have lodged an appeal on behalf of the Seven Sisters Islamic Centre in Haringey, and previously we have won planning appeals on behalf of the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Association against the London Borough of Hounslow and Westminster Bangladeshi Association against Westminster City Council.

Cases such as these can lead to a lot of community and political interest, which can unfortunately cloud planning judgement. Often the planning principles are sound and this would appear to be reflected in our appeal successes.

In our successful costs award against the London Borough of Hounslow, the Inspector acknowledged the number of local objections but concluded:

“…although the effect of a proposal on the living conditions of residents is a matter of judgement, I find that the Council’s evidence was generalised and unsupported by any objective analysis”

The Inspector awarded the Council to pay our full appeal costs.
